Leaving on a Jet Plane

Does anyone check this thing anymore? If you do and you're wondering about my frequent and intermittent delinquency, I have a reason.

It's a pretty incredible fact about my life in 2008. From January 2008 to date, I have taken 27 trips. 27, y'all.

I checked my planner to make sure I'd gotten them all, and might have missed a couple, but regardless.

That means roughly 54 plane/train rides. A trip every couple of weeks.

No wonder I'm tired. No wonder this blog is a mess.

At least I have an excuse. And we have a progressive incoming administration! And we're gonna get some kind of health care reform. But this might mean a few more trips in 2009.

At least, I'm racking up the frequent flyer miles.

Romanian Poetry

Unwords

He offered me a leaf like a hand with fingers.
I offered him a hand like a leaf with teeth.
He offered me a branch like an arm.
I offered him my arm like a branch.
He tipped his trunk towards me
like a shoulder.
I tipped my shoulder to him
like a knotted trunk.
I could hear his sap quicken, beating
like blood.
He could hear my blood slacken like rising sap.
I passed through him.
He passed through me.
I remained a solitary tree.
He
a solitary man.

A big day.

Yeah, it's kind of a big deal.

I love this.

Foliage

In the midst of election maddness, I will be riding the train through the New England mountains for a conference in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Upon my return, I will share pictures and tell tales of hot chocolate sipped on strolls through sleepy New England towns. Or, more likely, I'll tell you how gorgeous it is up there, how I spent too much time in meetings and how much I miss those days when we gathered leaves and jumped in them on The Green at Mount Holyoke.
